Kalk Bay Books is an independent bookshop that opened in November 2006. The staff at the bookshop is more than just sales assistants – each of them are passionate about books and reading and, more than anything; they love to talk to other people about books they love and to find out what their customers enjoy.
In the four years since they opened, a wonderful community has built up around the bookshop. They know many of their customers by name and have come to regard them as friends (which is just as well as we spend so much time at the bookshop, which is open seven days a week, with extended shopping hours on Fridays and Saturdays). They are proud supporters of South African writers and take great pleasure in hosting book launches for them. In addition to launches, they host regular book discussions and lectures, and poetry readings, as well as discussions on subjects they believe will interest their customers. All of these events are free of charge.
When they opened, they set out to create an environment that appeals to readers and authors alike. The shop is in a beautiful old stone building overlooking the Kalk Bay Harbour. The walls are lined with shelves, and a leather couch, rugs and pictures create an old-fashioned home-library experience. (A few of them have felt so much at home that they’ve fallen asleep on the couch!)
They only stock new books – each of them ‘hand-selected’ – they however don’t keep every book that’s published, but customers can be sure that the books on their shelves come with their personal recommendation. In addition to the latest releases, they carry a wide stock of classics and modern classics. If they don’t have a book a customer is looking for, they search far and wide to find it and will deliver across the peninsula (and courier worldwide) if the customers can’t get to Kalk Bay to collect their purchases personally.
Best of all for all of them at Kalk Bay Books – get to read a lot, to talk about books a lot and to call it all work!
