Original T-Bag Designs came into being because a British lady came to live in Hout Bay and was horrified by the poverty she witnessed in the area and was determined to create jobs for the people in the local township. With the help of a good friend, she came up with the idea of using the surface of a dried, used tea bag as a canvas where these people could express their artistic talents.
Many years have passed since this idea was birthed. Thanks to hard work and determination Jill Heyes and her team of 23 are now able to welcome visitors, from all over the world, to their workshop. Each item is handmade. By making ‘Functional Art’ the T-Bag Team have lifted themselves, and their families, out of poverty. Their success as a tourist destination has enabled them to offer other struggling groups a platform to sell their products.
